Expertise in circular economy and sustainable supply chain

I help organisations increase profitability and build resilience by decoupling growth from resource use.

Miguel Brand – BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE

With more than 20 years of experience in procurement and supply chain, my career has developed across a wide range of industries and organisational contexts. Much of this work has been carried out in companies with a strong engineering foundation. This aligns closely with my own technical background and has shaped a structured, analytical approach to solving business problems.

My focus soon shifted towards business transformation, which led me to lead strategic initiatives within procurement, supply chain, and digitalisation in the automotive and renewable energy sectors. While most of this work took place in large, multinational organisations, the underlying focus has always been on creating business value, and this approach is equally relevant for smaller and mid-sized businesses.

From Transformation to Circular Economy

Working across multiple functions and teams required looking at problems from different perspectives, understanding how decisions in one area affect others, and breaking down complex challenges into manageable parts. Over time, this taught me how to apply a practical and systematic way of working with complexity, rather than being overwhelmed by it.

My interest in circularity was inspired by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Cradle to Cradle, and it gradually shaped my professional focus on sustainability beyond incremental improvements. Rather than viewing sustainability as a collection of isolated initiatives, circularity emerged as a powerful strategic framework—one that enables organisations to use resources more effectively, close material and value loops, and build long-term resilience in an increasingly resource-constrained world.

Ambition and approach

Today, this combination of transformation experience, systems thinking, and circular economy expertise underpins my consultancy approach. My ambition is to support organisations in moving beyond conventional sustainability actions towards more strategic, long-term circular business models—business models that embed circular principles at the core of how value is created and sustained, delivering resource efficiency, improved profitability, and long-term resilience.

In addition to my work as a consultant, I teach Circular Economy, Life Cycle Analysis, Supply Chain Management, and related subjects within business management at VIA University College.
